<p dir="ltr">As the crowd tried to walk towards the National Stadium, host to several tournament matches, mounted police blocked their way.</p>

With tensions running high, police fired tear gas several times to break up the demonstration.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The crowd was joined by a group of indigenous people who had climbed onto the roof of the Brazilian Congress building to demand changes in how their land is demarcated.</p>
<p dir="ltr">A policeman was reportedly injured in the leg by an arrow shot during the scuffles.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The demonstrations gridlocked the traffic in Brasilia for hours.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Last year, up to a million people joined demonstrations across the country to demand better public services and highlight corruption and the high cost of staging the World Cup.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Since then several other anti-World Cup protests have been staged in Brazil, with many descending into violence.</p>

South Korea hospital fire 'kills 21'

<p dir="ltr">At least 20 patients and a nurse have been killed in a fire at a hospital in Janseong county, South Korea.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Six others are in critical condition after the fire at Hyosarang Hospital, about 300 km south of Seoul.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Most of those who died are thought to have been in their 70s and 80s, and confined to their beds.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Officials said most of the victims died after suffocating on poisonous fumes. The fire was put out within half an hour.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The incident comes at a time of mourning for South Korea after more than 300 people died in a ferry sinking last month.</p>
<p dir="ltr">South Korean President Park Geun-hye has formally apologised to the nation for the ferry disaster, promising to improve safety standards.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Prime Minister at the time, Chung Hong-won, resigned over the government's handling of the disaster.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The hospital incident also comes a day after seven people were killed and 20 others injured in a fire at a bus terminal in Goyang city.</p>

Spectacular attacks on prestige targets attract attention - that's part of their purpose for al-Shabab. But they're just the tip of the iceberg. I've visited Somalia with African Union forces - Amisom - three times in the past year. There were smaller attacks by al-Shabab almost every single day I was there.</div>

The African Union soldiers seek to dismiss these as mere 'harassment' of their garrisons. But these probing attacks - sometimes roadside bombs, sometimes sniper fire - pin the troops down. This is asymmetric warfare and it costs the African Union blood and equipment.</div>

In the past three years Amisom has made significant military advances, pushing al-Shabab out of its fixed positions in Mogadishu and retaking major towns such as Kismayo and Baidoa.</div>

But al-Shabab has the capacity to keep coming back. It is generally accepted in Somalia that if Amisom - with US backing - was not there, the government in Mogadishu would almost certainly fall.</div>

It comes after months of tension with Russia, which has been blamed by Kiev and its Western allies of stoking separatist sentiment in eastern parts of Ukraine. President Putin has denied the claims.<br />

Security<br />

Over 1,000 observers for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) have been deployed nationwide at polling stations.<br />

But the OSCE has pulled out most of its observers from the eastern Donetsk region over fears for their security.<br />

Pro-Russia separatists have warned people not to vote in the east<br />

"If necessary we will revert to the use of force," Denis Pushilin, a leader of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic, is quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.<br />

Separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk declared independence from Ukraine after holding referendums on 11 May, a move not recognised by Kiev nor its Western allies.<br />

The two regions took their cue after a disputed referendum in Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in March.<br />

More than 75,000 police and volunteers are said to have mobilised to ensure security during the vote.<br />

Polling stations will remain open until 20:00 (17:00 GMT), with definitive results expected on Monday.<br />

Jos Blast: Decaying Corpses Secretly Buried Yesterday

Scores of people, who died in Jos twin explosion dating back to May 20 were secretly buried yesterday as the Plateau State government was not able to preserve the unclaimed corpses in the hospital mortuaries.<br />

While there was no official announcement about the burial, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) official and the Plateau Specialist Hospital director confirmed the information to Premium Times. According to the data provided, the explosion victims were buried along Maingo road in Jos South LGA.<br />
<br />
It would be recalled that two days ago we filed the report about the fact that the hospitals' mortuaries were not sufficient enough to keep all the corpses and that some of them, mostly women and children, were spotted lying on the floor.<br />
<br />
The alarm over importance to conduct mass burial was allegedly raised on Friday, after the corpses had decayed causing putrid smell in the area near the Specialist Hospital. According to the sources, in fear of possible danger and health implications it was decided to bury the bodies.<br />
<br />
The Executive Secretary of SEMA Alhasan Barde revealed that another mass burial would be carried out on Monday.<br />

Immigration officer member of Boko Haram arrested, reveals names of others

Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officer Ahmed Grema Mohammed has confessed to being a Boko Haram member and disclosed names of security people who took part in the attacks in the North.<br />
<br />
Mohammed was arrested in 2012 on suspicion of cooperating with the terrorists.<br />
<br />
Year and a half later the information proved true. According to Today, the statment by the Joint Task Force spokesman, Lt. Col Sagir Musa, says that Mohammed confessed to being involved in the killings of those politicians and security agents who spoke against the insurgents' activities in Damaturu, so as in the attack on police headquarters and Damaturu prison, and several others.<br />
<br />
The statement further reads:<br />

"The suspect revealed to JTF that he and 15 other members of the organization were intensively trained for three months on G3 and AK 47 rifles, as well as in assassinations and special operations in Niger Republic. He also revealed names of some security personnel that participated in terrorists' attacks in Borno and Yobe states."<br />
<br />
The people named by the NIS officer were immediately arrested.<br />

Two pupils, three others burnt to death

Fivepersons including two pupils were yesterday roasted to death when 
two fuel tankers collided at Asejire area on Ibadan-Ife expressway which
 caught fire instantly.<br />
Six other persons sustained varied degrees of injuries and are now receiving treatment in the hospital.<br />
One of the dead pupils was said to be waiting for a bus along the road when the raging inferno consumed him.<br />
Several
 buildings, shops, mechanic workshops and market stalls were completely 
razed by the fire, which emanated from the spilled content of the fallen
 trailer.<br />
When our correspondent got to the scene, mangled body of
 the burnt public school pupil, whose identity could not be ascertained 
was spotted, just as men of the fire brigade service, Federal Road 
Safety Corps FRSC and policemen were busy managing the chaotic 
situation.<br />
The accident according to eye witnesses caused traffic 
gridlock along the expressway as the section from Ibadan end was closed 
to traffic while the evacuation of the burnt vehicles was ongoing.<br />
A
 victim, identified as Tajudeen Bakare, whose residence was completely 
burnt told newsmen at the scene of the accident that “the tankers while 
attempting to overtake each other on the hill hit themselves and one of 
them, carrying petrol spilled its contents into gutters and small stream
 and suddenly we heard a loud bang and there was fire everywhere”.<br />
The
 unit commander of the FRSC, Egbeda, Commander Abiodun Akinlade who 
confirmed the accident explained that “around 7.30am, we received a call
 that there was an accident and on coming down we discovered one of the 
articulated vehicles had skidded off the road and burst into flames”.<br />
According
 to him, “It is like they were doing competition on the highway, trying 
to overtake each other. I also understand that a school bus was also 
trying to pick a child and  the fallen tanker affected the bus and we 
lost two people there. We also lost two people from the articulated 
vehicle”<br />

APC raises alarm over arrest, intimidation of members in Gombe

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has alerted the nation to the 
systematic arrest, harassment and intimidation of its members and 
supporters in Gombe by the PDP-led government in the state and its 
police collaborators.<br />
In a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by 
its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party
 said the clampdown on the APC in Gombe is similar to what obtains in 
Bayelsa state, over which the party had cause to raise the alarm on May 
14th, and is sure to extend to other states as the 2015 general 
elections approach, because of the desperation and anti-democratic 
credentials of the PDP.<br />
It said the situation in Gombe State is 
marked by the continuous destruction of APC properties, including 
offices, flags, posters, banners and billboards in most of the local 
government areas and party headquarters.<br />
”Sadly, the police who 
are maintained by taxpayers’ funds and are expected to be non-partisan 
have been providing cover for the PDP agents who engage in this 
destructive spree, while being quick to arrest our members and 
supporters who try to resist the destruction of our party’s properties.<br />
”In
 addition, the police engage in frequent arrest and detention of our 
youths and supporters, who are then charged to court in an action that 
is clearly aimed at weakening their resolve to exercise their 
constitutional rights of free association, and ultimately to destabilize
 our party.<br />
”Such arrests and intimidation of our youth and other 
supporters have occurred in Dukku, Balanga, Kaltungo, Akko, Nafada and 
Gombe, and the latest occurred a few days ago involving the mass arrest 
of our members, especially youths,” APC said.<br />
The party expressed 
concern that the arrests and other acts of intimidation are about to 
increase, as the DPO of Gombe Division, DSP Babayola, has been tacitly 
empowered with a fleet of hilux vans to destabilize the APC in Gombe 
Metropolis, which is the epi-centre of the arrest, detention and torture
 of APC members.<br />
It reminded the police that the destabilization 
of opposition political parties, arrest and intimidation of opposition 
members and supporters and the provision of cover for thugs to destroy 
the properties of opposition political parties are not part of the 
constitutional duties of the police, hence they should desist from 
engaging in what is clearly an unconstitutional act.<br />
”On our part,
 we will continue to monitor and document these acts of brigandage and 
the role of the police, with a view to ensuring that they are lawfully 
challenged in due course. We also call on the police hierarchy to call 
their officers and men in Gombe to order, now that they have become an 
accomplice to political brigandage and also become glaringly partisan,” 
APC said.<br />
The party appealed to its members and supporters in 
Gombe to continue to eschew violence and maintain their peace, even in 
the face of obvious provocation from the intolerant and anarchic PDP-led
 government in the state.

BNC wants attempt on UNIBEN VC’s life probed

BENIN
 CITY-THE Benin National Congress (BNC), a Benin socio-cultural 
organization, has called on security agents to investigate the alleged 
attempt on the life of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin 
(UNIBEN), Prof.Osayuki Oshodin.<br />
The group said, “we are closely 
monitoring the process of the appointment of Prof. Oshodin’s successor, 
we need not say that the University is preferably relocated to another 
State of Nigeria; than for us to give a free hand to discreet 
poison-killers and blood suckers to overwhelm patriotic administrator 
like Prof. Oshodin; whose tenure is synonymous with landmarks 
achievements”.<br />
Vanguard learnt the Vice-Chancellor who is 
currently responding to treatment abroad has been suffering from 
poisoned food for some time now.<br />
However, the BNC statement signed
 by Dr David Ekomwenrenren, asserted “we will openly mobilize against 
anyone desperately seeking to benefit from these centrifugal attacks on 
Benin intelligentsias, where Prof. Oshodin belongs. We call on the 
intelligence community to make frantic efforts to unearth those behind 
the despicable means to terminate Prof. Oshodin’s life as failure to act
 may be an invitation to self-help by the Benins and concerned 
Nigerians.<br />
“Our stand for due process and fair play is 
non-negotiable; and we are ready to project same even with the last drop
 of our blood. Enemies of development should take heed of this clarion 
call by resigning from their narrow minded and devious ambition to 
succeed Oshodin after their life threatening affliction against him. We 
are fully prepared” it stated.<br />
