Lagos Pastor ‘implicated’ in ritual saga opens

<p dir="ltr"> like a thunderbolt. Mrs. Rosemary Chukwu, a mother of four, residing at 33, Omolegede street, a suburb of Ikorodu area in Lagos State, abducted a seven-year-old primary School pupil, Emmanuel Emeka, and was about taking him to a den when it was foiled . Shockingly, the suspect revealed to the bewildered crowd that gathered after she was caught that her pastor asked her to bring the boy. She mentioned the General Overseer of Holy Family Ministry a.k.a House of Mercy in the same Ikorodu, as her pastor. The pastor, identified as Ernest Chukwuemeka Nwankwo, 49, was said to be on the run and was later apprehended and handed over to the police at the State Criminal Investigations Department, Panti, Yaba, Lagos for interrogation. Crime Guard was able to corner the embattled pastor as he was leaving the confines of police cell at Panti and he gave his own account of the ugly incident. Excerpts: INTRODUCTION “My name is Prophet Ernest Chukwuemeka Nwankwo, from Nsugbe in Anambra East L.G.A, Anambra State. I have a Ministry formerly called Jesus Divine Healing and Deliverance Ministry now called Holy Family, Happy Family Ministry. I was out of Lagos for two weeks. I came back on Tuesday, June 14, and came to my Ministry on Wednesday morning. My ministry is located at 319, Lagos road, Majudeen in Ikorodu. We carry out prayers and deliverance in the ministry. The ministry started in 1997. We have no less than 15000 members with a spread in virtually all the major cities in Nigeria including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. I started as a member of Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement before I established my own ministry. I am 49 yrs. Chukwuemeka Nwankwo “ I do not know how these allegations of ritual actions against me started. My ministry has existed for 17 years and we have never been associated with any bad thing or any untoward allegation. We have been doing well in carrying out God’s work since we came into existence. People troop to our ministry, we organize children’s day for over 30,000 children all over our branches every year. In Ikorodu, we normally have not less than 10,000 children during the day. We have hosted these children since we stated and we have never had any problem for more than 10 years now. We have equally been doing well in all our activities, we have rehabilitation center where mad people are healed. Relations of such people bring them to our ministry and also stay with them until they are healed after which they will go home. We do not charge them, we feed them free. So, the ministry has been flourishing in all our branches. “When I got to the office on Wednesday, June 15 to do some work and leave for Abuja for another programme, within 20 minutes, around 7.30am, a group of people, armed with dangerous weapons invaded our ministry, breaking down everything at sight. They also descended on our members who were over 50 in attendance for the morning worship. They were over 300 and were ferociously destroying all the properties and manhandling everybody. It was like hell was let loose on us. They were armed to the teeth and were unrestrained in their bid to destroy everything in the ministry. They not only subjected our members to serious beating, they also took all their bags and stripped all the women and children naked. I was inside the office when they invaded the place but they later broke into my office and descended on me. We were all seriously wounded and our bodies covered with blood. RESCUE Surprisingly, four of the hoodlums took pity on me and rescued me from their clutches as they were hitting my head with cutlasses and dangerous weapons. They took me to Owutu police station where I made a statement. When they asked me how it started, I could not explain but simply told them that some hoodlums invaded our ministry for no just cause. It was while we were there that the people that rescued me told us that a woman claimed I sent her to kidnap somebody’s child. It was like a fairy tale to me. Before the police I asked for the identity of the woman and why she claimed I told her to kidnap somebody and they said it was for ritual purposes.     After I recovered from the shock, the policemen then advised that I should go and treat myself because I was bleeding profusely as a result of the beating. I then proceeded to the hospital for treatment only to start reading in the papers the following day a lot of other damaging stories and that I was on the run. I personally reported to the police at Owutu in Ikorodu after treating myself and also personally reported at Panti the following day on a Monday. AT PANTI By Thursday morning, unfounded rumours were flying every where. On Friday, while I was going to treat myself, I quickly sent my lawyer to Panti after hearing the rumours flying everywhere about me and that the case was transferred to Panti. My lawyer told them that I personally reported to the police at Owute after the incident and that I was allowed to go and treat myself. He then wrote an undertaking to produce me the next Monday and we all came to Panti that Monday straight from the General hospital Ikeja where I had an x-ray.   Even one of my ribs was said to have cracked and I sustained other serious injuries. INTERROGATION AT PANTI I can’t remember seeing or meeting the woman before. A lot of people come to my ministry so, it will be very difficult for me to know all of them. However, the police at Panti interrogated both of us and, in fact, when they brought her before me, I could not remember seeing her in life and I told the policemen this fact. I can’t even remember whether she called me on telephone or not because I cannot say the number of people that call me on telephone for my number is open and given to people freely to help in solving their spiritual problems. Nevertheless, the police interrogated both of us, she claimed that Holy spirit told her that I should give her N2.5 million, and that she came and told me to give her the money but I told her that I had no money, that she came back again to me and requested for the money and I then told her to go and bring a child before I will give her the money. I then asked her where we discussed this, if she has any evidence to show that she ever visited my ministry because visitors to the ministry always register their names before seeing me, or if there is any other evidence to show that we discussed that kind of thing. I punctured her story because I cannot understand what concerns me with her message with her Holy spirit. SUCKING BLOOD She also claimed that I have been seeing her in the spirit to suck her blood and that of her daughter with two gallons since she failed to bring a child to me. She claimed that I used to stand at her door for two days, tormenting her, and that was why she had to go for the child when she was caught. I asked her where we met and discussed because I have been out of town for two weeks and how did she know that I came back. She said she was aware that I came back because I used to carry out consultations. It is well known by everybody that my consultation days are announced for members of the public to come and be healed. She also claimed she called me on phone in December last year and that she came to the ministry once this year but she could not substantiate where we discussed her claims. She was thoroughly interrogated but she kept on contradicting herself as if she was either insane or under a spell. Unfortunately, her daughter she claimed I was sucking her blood with hers whom she said was 14 years was not there during the interrogation. I had hoped that she was there for us all to be able to decipher what her mother was talking about because she is old enough to speak for her self at 14. I have never had this kind of ugly experience and I pray never to have it again. I also pray that the police should endevour to get to the route of this case because I have suffered so much over a matter I do not know anything about. KIDNAP SAGA The man that was shown saying he was kidnapped and brought from Anambra State is one of the mad people undergoing treatment in my ministry. The cousin that brought him to the ministry is Mr. Atuanya, a member of my ministry and his wife has been with him in the ministry while he was undergoing treatment. They are living witnesses and they are ready to testify to anybody that cares to know the truth. This rumor against me is very painful to me because I suffered for over fourteen years to build this ministry to serve mankind. All of a sudden, and from the pit of hell, an unknown figure materialized from no where to pour odium on me and accuse me of ritual acts. In all these years, nobody has ever complained or petitioned against my activities in the ministry. Instead, people have been pouring encomiums and giving glory to God for all we have been doing for mankind. The whole thing is still like a dream and I pray I would wake up and testify that it was really a dream. My ministry operates an open door policy, we have no go areas, both visitors and members of the ministry are never restricted even up to my personal office. Why must I send her to bring a child to me when I am happily married with children, what will I do with the child? INCALCULABLE DAMAGE This very ugly development has affected me psychologically in a tremendous way, the emotional trauma is untold. In terms of the good will I built over the years, the name, in fact, one cannot quantify the degree of destruction done to me by this very ugly and unfounded, mischievous rumor. I have suffered and lost almost everything because the ugly news went beyond the shores of this country. People have been calling from all the parts of the world and you know that bad news travels faster than any other thing. It is very unfortunate that people believe such a story when there is nothing at all to hang it on the head of the prophet. And, when you look at the woman, you will know that she is some how deranged and we are convinced that by the time police finish their investigation, the truth will be out. WHY ME? What I cannot fathom is why she choose to tell all these lies against me. She may have been sent by somebody to run me down because people in that neighborhood said they saw one mysterious SUV hovering around in the wee hours before the incident and also the mother of the victim reportedly said she saw an exotic vehicle that later picked up her children,. Police should investigate to find out who owns the vehicle and where they were taken to. Who ever picked her children must have a link with this incident. Police should also find out whether this is the first time she is doing this kind of thing and if it is not, how many people must have falling victims to her antics? Worse still, so far, nobody has told us where the woman is from because the way the media descended on the ministry, they left out the main ingredient of the whole matter as if they were sponsored to run down the ministry. All I know is that she cannot be doing this alone. Her sponsors should be fished out. So far, the police has been professional in their interrogation and they made us understand that investigations will take time and that the truth must surely surface. 2 Policemen Arrested For Stealing N30 Million From Oba Akiolu’s Palace

<p dir="ltr">Two policemen, Victor Ikudehin, 34, and Philip Hunsa, 34, have been arrested for allegedly stealing N30 million from the palace of the Oba of Lagos -  Oba Rilwan Akiolu’s palace.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The policemen who were deployed to provide security for the Oba of Lagos  were arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court sitting at Igbosere on Wednesday.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Police prosecutor, Superintendent of Police, SP Charles Odii, told the court that the duo committed the offense between March 2012 and March 28, 2014.</p>
<p dir="ltr">According to him, the incident took place at the Oba’s Palace in Iduganran at Lagos Island of the state and the money that was stolen belonged to His Royal Highness, Oba Rilwan Akiolu.</p>
<p dir="ltr">According to the prosecutor, the offences are punishable under Section 409, 285 (7) and 408, of the Criminal Laws of Lagos state of Nigeria, 2011.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Sections 285 prescribes three years imprisonment, for any offender, if found guilty.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The policemen pleaded not guilty.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Magistrate Helen Omisore granted the defendants bail in the sum of N250,000 each with two responsible sureties each in like sum and  adjourned the matter till July 31.<br><br></p>

FIFA has no cause to ban Nigeria – Minister

<p dir="ltr">Just as the reality of the world wide ban slammed on Nigeria by FIFA is sinking in, the National Sports Commission has claimed that the suspension order was not a reflection of the event that led to the removal of the Aminu Maigari led board of the Nigeria Football Federation. The NSC said in press statement yesterday, that government did not in anyway interfere in the process that brought down the NFF board and thus it was wrong for FIFA to assume such. Tamuno Danagogo “The NSC has received the news of the suspension of the NFF by FIFA on the grounds of an alleged court order which the world football body has interpreted as government interference in the affairs of the football house. “The said court action brought against the NFF followed an internal crisis within the football family and has nothing to do with government. “While FIFA has stated that unless the court action is withdrawn, the suspension of the NFF will not be lifted, it is pertinent to state that neither the NSC nor government is involved in the court process.” The NSC added that it believes the ban is “a procedural practice by FIFA each time it feels that there is an alleged interference by government”. According to the release the NFF has sent documents to show that the general assembly was held according to FIFA statutes and so the vote to remove the board at that meeting should stand. “ Nigerians should remain calm as efforts are being made to ensure that the suspension is lifted as soon as possible; as appropriate represen-tation has been made to FIFA to present the true situation of the crisis within the football family.</p>

 is suffering greater carnage at the hands of Islamist group, Boko 
Haram, than it did during a secessionist Civil War, yet this has 
ironically made the country’s break-up less likely, Nigerian Nobel 
Laureate, Wole Soyinka, has said.<br />

Speaking
 to Reuters at his Abeokuta home, Soyinka said the horrors inflicted by 
the militants had shown Nigerians that unity between Muslims and 
Christians might be the only way to avoid even greater sectarian 
slaughter.<br />
The bloodshed is now worse than during the 1967-70 Civil 
War when a secessionist attempt by the Eastern region nearly tore the 
country into ethnic regions, he added.<br />
According to Soyinka, “we have never been confronted with butchery on this scale, even during the civil war.<br />
“There were atrocities during the war, but we never had such a near 
predictable level of carnage and this is what is horrifying.”

<br /> The Coordinating Minister of Economy and 
Minister of Finance, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala says payment of N45 billion to 
oil marketers is underway, after the verification of claims currently 
ongoing.<br />
In a statement from the Special Adviser to the Minister, 
Paul  Nwabuikwu, the Minister said the information was necessary to 
satisfy all the enquiries coming in with regards to the status of 
payment to the oil marketers.<br />
According to her, the verification 
was deemed necessary to ensure that the federal government is not held 
liable in the event of any litigation between the banks and their 
marketer-customers, following the institution of the new procedure by 
Office of the Attorney General, OAGF.<br />
‘‘We have received several 
enquiries regarding the status of payments to oil marketers for fuel 
imports. Please note the following: Only marketers whose claims have 
been cleared after they have gone through the verification processes are
 paid. This is to ensure that the unpleasant experiences of the recent 
past with regard to wrong and irregular payments are not repeated.<br />

‘‘The process for the latest batch of payments totalling N45 billion is
 currently on and the Office of the Accountant-General of the 
Federation, OAGF has confirmed that some marketers who have submitted 
letters of indemnity to the OAGF have already been paid. Other claims 
are being attended to.<br />
“The letters of indemnity are an additional
 requirement for payment because banks which financed imports by some 
marketers had written to the OAGF through their lawyers to complain that
 their clients (the marketers) are making interest payments through 
other banks contrary to the terms of agreements reached.<br />
The banks
 in question are insisting that the interest payments be made through 
them since they granted the facilities that attracted the interest.

Police Finds 1,555 Child P*rnography Images In Catholic Priest’s College Room

A Catholic priest, <strong>Father Stanislaus Hogan, 63</strong>, who had<strong> 1555 child P*********y images,</strong> (from 3 months to 16 years old pictures of children) in his bedroom at <strong>St Ignatius College in Adelaide</strong> where he worked has been charged to court after police found those images in his locked room at the college.<br />

His main interest was in images of boys in the low-to-mid teens, the 
very age range of children at the school where he was employed.<br />

But his lawyer wants the court to forgive him after pleading guilty, 
stating that he has done a lot of good in his life and he has also made 
clear his intention to apply to be released from his vows on August 14.<br />

She pleaded with the court not to send her client to jail, but the 
judge said such a sentence would be ‘manifestly inadequate’. Hogan, 
whose bail was continued, will be sentenced on a later date.<br />

Meanwhile, a psychologist said <strong>Hogan</strong> had previously 
suffered with alcohol problems and depression, which were directly 
related to his struggle to reconcile his sexuality with his ethical and 
religious beliefs

Addressing journalists, on behalf of the Sultan, after a 
very long meeting collating the reports of people earlier dispatched 
Friday to look out for the new moon, Chairman of National Moon sighting 
Committee and Chairman Advisory Council to the Sultanate, Prof. Sambo 
Wali, said the moon was sighted in Birnin Kebbi and Gwandu in Kebbi 
State.<br />
By this development, Professor Wali said Saturday would be the first day of Ramadan and urged Muslims to begin to fast.<br />
“As
 a result, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General, Nigeria Supreme 
Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, had 
asked Muslims in the country to commence Ramadan fast of 1435AH on

Iraq in crisis

<p dir="ltr"><br>
Sunni fighters, among them the jihadists of Isis, have been fighting across<br>
northern Iraq<br>
Iraq's government is struggling in its battle against militants, diplomats<br>
and politicians have told the BBC.<br>
Fighters from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis) said they<br>
seized a border crossing to Syria and two towns in north-west Iraq on<br>
Saturday.<br>
Correspondents say Isis appears to be better trained, better equipped and<br>
more experienced than the army.<br>
The Sunni extremists attacked the city of Mosul in June and have since<br>
seized large swathes of territory across Iraq.<br>
There is deep pessimism in Baghdad about the way the government's war<br>
against Isis is going, says the BBC's World Affairs Editor John Simpson,<br>
who has been speaking to senior politicians and diplomats in the capital.<br>
The Iraqi air force ran out of American Hellfire missiles two weeks ago, and<br>
in any case only has two Cessna planes capable of firing Hellfires, he adds.<br>
Experts say Isis has established secure safe havens, including some in<br>
neighbouring Syria, which will be difficult to target.<br>
Sectarian tensions<br>
On Saturday, Iraqi officials admitted that Isis had seized a border crossing<br>
near the town of Qaim, killing 30 troops after a day-long battle.<br>
Rebels also said they had taken the towns of Rawa and Aneh along the<br>
Euphrates river.<br>
Correspondents say a campaign along the river may eventually lead to an<br>
assault on Baghdad from the west.<br>
The capture of the Qaim crossing in western Iraq could also help Isis<br>
transport weapons and other equipment to different battlefields, analysts<br>
say.<br>
Extremist fighters claim to have seized parts of Iraq's largest oil refinery, at<br>
Baiji, and have also taken a disused chemical weapons factory in<br>
Muthanna, 70km (45 miles) north-west of Baghdad.<br>
The government denied that militants had gained access to parts of the<br>
Baiji refinery but said the army was facing "violent attacks" from gunmen.<br>
Also on Saturday, thousands of Shia militia loyal to the powerful cleric<br>
Moqtada al-Sadr paraded through the streets of Baghdad.<br>
The cleric, whose Mehdi Army fought the US in Iraq for years, had called for<br>
a military parade across the country.<br>
Correspondents say the show of force will be seen as a very disturbing<br>
development by the Baghdad government as the parade will only raise<br>
sectarian tensions at a time when the government is under pressure to rally<br>
the country together against the extremists.<br>
US Secretary of State John Kerry is expected to travel to Iraq soon to press<br>
for a more representative cabinet, hoping this could ease tensions between<br>
the country's rival Muslim sects.<br>
The US, which pulled out of Iraq in 2011, is sending some 300 military<br>
advisers to Iraq to help in the fight against the insurgents there.<br>
But in the face of Iraqi calls for US air strikes, the White House is insisting<br>
that there is no purely military solution to the crisis.<br>
Correspondents say Mr Obama believes Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki has<br>
endangered the country by ignoring Sunni concerns and governing in the<br>
interests of the Shia majority.<br>
Iraq's sectarian split<br>
Mehdi Army fighters have rallied in Baghdad, and as here, in Najaf to the<br>
south of the capital<br>
Sunnis and Shia share fundamental beliefs, but differ in doctrine, ritual,<br>
law, theology and religious organisation<br>
The origins of the split lie in a dispute over who should have succeeded<br>
the Prophet Muhammad as leader of the Muslim community<br>
Sunnis are the majority sect in the Muslim world, but Shia, most of them<br>
ethnic Arabs, form between 60% and 65% of Iraq's population; Sunnis<br>
make up 32-37%, split between Arabs and Kurds<br>
Sunni Arabs dominated Iraq under Saddam Hussein and their persecution<br>
of the Shia stoked sectarian tensions; the US-led invasion in 2003 gave<br>
the Shia an opportunity to seek redress<br>

Sunni militants invade Iraq's biggest oil refinery

Islamist-led militants have invaded Iraq's biggest oil refinery, after pounding it with mortars and machine guns from two directions.<br />
<br />
An official quoted by Reuters said the militants now controlled 75% of the Baiji refinery, 210km (130 miles) north of Baghdad.<br />
<br />
Government forces have made new air strikes on militants advancing towards the capital.<br />
<br />
Fighting is also reported in the western city of Ramadi.<br />
<br />
The government is battling to push back ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) and its Sunni Muslim allies in Diyala and Salahuddin provinces, after the militants overran the second city, Mosul, last week.<br />
<br />
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki appeared on television with Sunni Muslim and Kurdish leaders on Tuesday to issue a call for national unity in the face of the advance - they demanded that non-state forces lay down their arms.<br />
<br />
<br />
However, such a call is unlikely to have much effect as Mr Maliki has openly sponsored the formation of Shia Muslim militias to fight alongside regular Iraqi troops, the BBC's Jim Muir reports from Irbil in northern Iraq.<br />
<br />
Hundreds of people have been killed since the start of the militant offensive last week, many of them believed to be captured soldiers publicly shot by ISIS-led firing squads.<br />
<br />
During fighting in the city of Baquba this week, 44 prisoners were killed inside a police station in unclear circumstances.<br />
<br />

Oil stores attacked<br />

The attack on the refinery started at 04:00 (01:00 GMT) from outside two of the three main entrances to the refinery, according to Reuters.<br />

Smoke rose from a spare parts warehouse and some stores of oil were reportedly destroyed.<br />
<br />
Foreign personnel were evacuated earlier but local staff reportedly remained in place, with the military defending the facility.<br />

Baiji accounts for a little more than a quarter of the country's entire refining capacity, all of which goes toward domestic consumption for things like petrol, cooking oil and fuel for power stations, an official told AP news agency.<br />
<br />
Militants in the western province of Anbar, where the capital is Ramadi, said they had made advances, with a number of police stations near the town of Hit going over to dissident tribes.<br />
<br />
Further north, the Iraqi government said it had recaptured the citadel in the strategic town of Tal Afar, where militants were said to have taken control on Monday.<br />
<br />
Using unusually strong language, Mr Maliki accused Saudi Arabia - which is largely Sunni - of backing ISIS.<br />
<br />
He also fired four army commanders for failing to halt the sweeping advance by the militants. They included the top commander for Nineveh, the first province where ISIS fighters made major gains.<br />
<br />
With Shia areas of the capital bombed almost daily, correspondents say inhabitants of Baghdad have developed a siege mentality.<br />
<br />
People with enough money have started to stockpile essential items of food, correspondents say, which has increased prices dramatically.<br />

The Federal Executive Council held special tribute in honour of 
former Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, 
who died in an Indian hospital last Saturday.<br />

They agreed that Akunyili who died of ovarian cancer left indelible mark in the sands of times of the nation’s history.<br />

At the special tribute session, council members took turn to extol 
the virtues of the former Director General of National Agency for Food 
and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) whom they described as an 
exemplary public servants and a patriotic Nigerian who was devoted to 
national development.<br />

They further recalled that the prevalent rate of fake drugs in 
circulation dropped from 60 per cent to 16 per cent during her tenure at
 NAFDAC.<br />

President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo rounded 
off the session with their special tributes in which they recollected 
memorable moments with the late former minister.<br />

Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, who served as Minister of
 State, Information under Akunyili moved a motion to condole the 
President, Nigerian women, the Igbos and indeed all Nigerians on her 
demise.<br />

Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe, seconded the 
motion. A minute silence was thereafter observed in her honour while 
the Minister<br />

of State, Federal Capital Territory, Olajumoke Akinjide; and the 
Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, Nurudeen Muhammed, prayed for the 
repose of her soul.<br />

In his tribute, Jonathan who said Akunyili was role model per 
excellence who was ready to do the right thing, no matter whose ox is 
gored, recalled his first encounter with her as NAFDAC DG and he as a 
deputy governor of Bayelsa State.<br />

He said he decided to invite Akunyili, through the state Commissioner
 for Health, to a breakfast with him in his official residence.<br />

He said he was surprised that the first thing she did at the 
breakfast table was to condemn the loaves of bread provided, saying they
 were too cold.<br />

He said, “My governor was outside the country then and he asked me to represent him at the opening session of the health event.<br />

“I was looking forward to meeting Akunyili at the event but she did 
not attend the session. I was told she would arrive in the evening. I 
therefore directed the state Commissioner for Health to ask her to join 
me for breakfast the following day.<br />

“The first thing she did at the breakfast table was to condemn the 
bread that was provided for breakfast. She said the bread was cold.<br />

“She summoned my stewards and admonished them to ensure that loaves 
of bread are warmed so that some molds do not cause stomach upset.”

 that Hong Kong's government has objected to plans to allow same-sex 
couples to wed at the British consulate in the Chinese city has angered 
gay rights activists.</div>
Hong Kong's best-known lesbian, <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-26254137" title="How Gigi Chao sparked Hong Kong gay rights debate">Gigi Chao</a>,
 whose billionaire father famously offered $100m (£60m) to any man in 
the world who can marry her, said the refusal was a "disgrace".<br />

"Yes, we are disappointed, but the news is not unexpected as 
this former colony is clearly intent on governing from the depths of 
denial and siding with the populist ochlocracy [mob rule] of homophobic 
groups," she says.<br />

She says she hopes the right will be extended, but it may not be so simple, legally speaking.<br />

After years of debate, same-sex marriage <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-26793127" title="Gay couples celebrate first weddings">became legal</a> in England and Wales in March.<br />

Starting in June, the legislation was extended to cover British nationals overseas.<br />

British embassies and consulates are allowed to conduct 
same-sex marriages for couples in which at least one partner is a UK 
national. <br />

The marriage service is offered only in countries where gay 
marriage is not normally allowed, and can only take place if the host 
government does not object.<br />

"Unfortunately, the Hong Kong government has raised an 
objection to the solemnisation of same-sex marriages in Hong Kong," said
 a spokeswoman at the British consulate.<br />

Australia, under the socially 
conservative Prime Minister Tony Abbott, has agreed to allow the 
ceremonies to go ahead, even though the marriages would not be legally 
recognised.</div>
When asked, the protocol department of the Hong Kong government declined to comment directly on its objection.<br />

"It would be for individual consulates general to decide what
 functions and services they would wish to provide their nationals," it 
said in a statement.<br />

"Although Hong Kong does not have laws on same-sex marriage, 
the government is firmly committed to promoting equal opportunities on 
the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity."<br />

The controversy comes in the same week that gay and lesbian 
rights activists like Ms Chao are preparing to launch the Pink Dot rally
 in Hong Kong.<br />

Sexual minorities and their families and friends have been 
invited to the public event, featuring free concerts by some of the 
city's well-known gay and lesbian entertainers.<br />

The Pink Dot movement actually began in 2009 in Singapore, 
another former British colony where UK nationals will not be allowed to 
marry their same-sex partners.

of major Brazilian cities to protest against what they see as excessive spending on the World Cup.

The host country's government is keen to prevent a 
repeat of some of the violence seen at those protests, and Brazilian 
president Dilma Rousseff has said she will not allow violent 
demonstrations to mar the World Cup.

Thousands of extra police and soldiers will be deployed to ensure the matches get under way smoothly.

Roy Hodgson's team will also play Uruguay and Costa Rica in their Group D fixtures.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker believes there are four teams with a realistic chance of winning the tournament.

"I have a feeling it will come down to four countries, 
although unfortunately I do not think one of them will be England," said
 former England striker Lineker.

"I'm going for Germany, Spain, Argentina or Brazil but I
 feel that the pressure may well be a little too much for the host 
nation."

The host nation have never lost their opening World Cup
 game, with the previous 20 opening games producing 14 victories and six
 draws for the hosts.
<br />

Scolari's Brazil side will be expected to win in Sao Paulo on Thursday, in a match that kicks off at 21:00 BST.

A capacity 65,000 crowd is expected for the match, with their journey to the stadium

over pay and the dismissal of 42 colleagues.

The host city for the opening ceremony had been braced 
for considerable disruption after traffic chaos was caused by a five-day
 stoppage earlier in the week.

As one problem eased another began, however, with 
airport workers in Brazil's second largest city Rio de Janeiro 
announcing a 24-hour strike starting at midnight on Wednesday, meaning 
industrial action will continue through the opening day of the World 
Cup.

Governing body Fifa said it had sold more than 2.9 
million tickets, but they were still available for several matches on 
Wednesday, including some involving Germany, Italy and France. 
<br />

There will be 31 matches shown live on BBC television 
and online, starting with Spain v Netherlands on Friday, 13 June, and 
live text commentary on all 64 matches, available on the BBC Sport 
website and app for mobile, tablet and connected TV.
<br />

BBC Radio 5 live will also be providing 24 days of live
 coverage and 61 live match commentaries from football's showpiece 
tournament.
