Oscar-nominated actor Will Smith shared his thoughts on the issues of racism and terrorism in his latest interview to the Hollywood reporter.
According to Will Smith's point of view, prejudices have a lot in common with racism, but still they are not the same and there's a crucial difference between them.
"Everybody is prejudiced," told Smith the Hollywood reporter, adding that "everybody has their life experiences that make them prefer one thing over another – it makes them prefer blond hair over a brunette; if you see somebody with dark skin walking down the street, you have a different reaction than you have with someone who is 5-foot 1-inch tall and white."
Answering the question whether actors are able to fight racist ideology within Hollywood, Smith expressed his confidence in that. "As actors, we have the ultimate power," he told. "Historically, story combined with imagery moves humanity forward. What we do- not that it's a responsibility, but it is the ultimate forum for changing people's hearts and minds."
Smith also added that the definition of racism includes the feeling that "your race is generally superior". He admitted that working in Hollywood he encountered people adhering to the racist ideology and that's why he's immediately decided not to work with them.
Speaking on his decision to turn down the lead role in Quentin Tarantino's controversial action movie "Django Unchained", Will Smith told that he and the director couldn't agree on the tone of the film.
"I wanted to make that movie so badly, but I felt the only way was, it had to be a love story, not a vengeance story," told Smith. "I don't believe in violence as the reaction to violence. So when I'm looking at that, it's like: 'No, no, no. It has to be for love.' We can't look at what happens in Paris and want to f*ck somebody up for that. Violence begets violence. So I just couldn't connect to violence being the answer. Love had to be the answer."
