Chelsea's faltering season shows no sign of
getting back on track after they lost 1-0 to
Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.
It was Bournemouth's first clean sheet away from
home in the Premier League, and only their
second of the season.
Jose Mourinho decided to leave Diego Costa on
the bench again, but the Spain international was
introduced at half-time after a listless first 45
minutes in which Chelsea struggled to find any
rhythm.
The reigning Premier League champions
improved in the second half but it wasn't until the
final 20 minutes that they finally put concerted
pressure on the Cherries' goal.
But it was Bournemouth who claimed the three
points as Glenn Murray headed home in the 82nd
minute.
Leicester City moved top of the table with a 3-0
victory over Swansea City on a day when both
Manchester clubs faltered.
Leicester, who began the day level on points with
Manchester City at the top of the table, took the
lead on five minutes when a corner was deflected
home off Riyad Mahrez's back.
Mahrez added a second on 22 minutes, curling a
shot past Lukasz Fabianski after the assistant
referee failed to flag him offside, and the Algeria
international completed his hat trick in the
second half from a Jamie Vardy assist.
Vardy, who set a record when scoring in his 11th
consecutive Premier League game last week,
would have equalled the English top-flight record
had he got on the scoresheet but he passed up a
series of chances at the Liberty Stadium.
Manchester City had begun the day as league
leaders but they dropped to third after losing 2-0
at Stoke.
City could do little to halt Stoke's charge, which
began when Marko Arnautovic opened the
scoring on seven minutes following excellent work
from Xherdan Shaqiri.
City threatened an equaliser when Jack Butland
produced a low save to deny Kevin De Bruyne,
but before long it was 2-0, with Shaqiri producing
a wonderful pass to set up Arnautovic for his
second.
Arnautovic came close to completing his hat trick
on several occasions and was denied by the
woodwork, but in the end his brace proved more
than enough to condemn City to defeat.
Manchester United are now fourth after they
battled to a goalless draw at home to West Ham
United.
The Hammers had several chances to break the
deadlock early on, with David De Gea making a
fine stop to deny Victor Moses before twice having
to rely on the woodwork to preserve parity.
West Ham -- already struggling with a series of
injuries to key players -- saw Moses withdrawn
before the break but they continued to threaten,
with Mauro Zarate passing up a glorious chance.
Arsenal moved up to second with a hard-fought
3-1 victory at home to Sunderland.
Arsenal, who needed keeper Petr Cech to make a
good early save from Fabio Borini, went ahead on
33 minutes when Mesut Ozil set up Joel Campbell,
who drilled the ball past Costel Pantilimon.
Sunderland were level just before half-time,
though, when Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud
deflected a Yann M'Vila free kick past Cech.
Cech was required to make another fine save
from Steven Fletcher just before the hour mark,
but Giroud made amends for his own goal soon
afterwards, heading home at the near post from
an Aaron Ramsey cross.
Arsenal, who saw Theo Walcott make his return to
action from the bench, increased their advantage
through Ramsey in injury time.
Tottenham Hotspur played out a 1-1 draw away
to West Bromwich Albion.
Dele Alli gave Spurs the advantage on 15 minutes
after latching on to a long pass from Toby
Alderweireld before firing home.
West Brom were level by the break though after a
fine move that saw Darren Fletcher produce a fine
cross for James McClean to head home.
Spurs could not find another goal and sit three
points behind the top four.
Aston Villa picked up their second point under
Remi Garde as they drew 1-1 at Southampton.
Saints had chances early on but eventually Villa
started to keep them at bay and the visitors went
into the break with the lead when Joleon Lescott
tapped home from a Jordan Veretout corner.
Saints drew level on 73 minutes when former
Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu
poked home a James Ward-Prowse corner, leaving
Villa six points adrift of 17th-place Sunderland.
Watford continued their impressive start with a
2-0 victory over Norwich City.
Troy Deeney gave Watford the lead from the
penalty spot after Alex Tettey was deemed to
have brought down Odion Ighalo.
Ighalo then had the ball in the net, but the
assistant referee controversially raised his flag for
offside.
The Nigerian striker eventually made amends,
slotting home in the 91st minute.
