As the recession bites harder, the Chief Distributor of Dangote Cement in the 36 states of Nigeria and former Labour Party candidate for the Federal House of Representatives, Oguche Umoru Benjamin, weekend, said no amount of prayers from both Moslems and Christians can change the present economic downturn in Nigeria but appointment of competent persons to man the economic life wire of the country.


To this end, Umoru has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack his Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun, and appoint former Minister of Finance, Okonjo Iweala to take over the ministry and revamp the economy.


According to him, Adeosun does not have the intellectual capability and the technical know how to navigate the economy of the country out of the woods, insisting that Iweala, who was two time minister in the administrations of Olusegun Obasanjo and the immediate past Goodluck Jonathan, has the economic ingenuity to fashion out policies for the nation’s economic survival.

He said no amount of prayers can change the present economic recession in Nigeria, noting that the only solution to the mess is the appointment of Ngozi Iweala, even as he expressed implicit confidence in the ability of Iweala to revamp the economy and make Nigeria bounce back again.

In a text message to NAIJ.com, the former Labour Party candidate for the Federal House of Representatives in the 2015 election in Kogi State, said “if you can recall former President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed her as minister of Finance as well as Goodluck Jonathan and she did exceptionally well. And it was well with Nigeria.

“She was Vice President of World Bank and she is experienced and knows how to play international politics. Reducing the security aides and withdrawing official vehicles of ministers is not solution to the present economic recession in Nigeria”.


He called on President Buhari to overlook her party affiliation and bring her on board, stressing that with her wealth of experience Nigeria would wake up from the present economic quagmire.


However, Iweala has distanced herself from participating in the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that even she is invited she would turn down the invitation.

She explained that there are competent persons in Buhari’s government who could do better job for Nigeria, insisting that it was better to allow the present managers of the economy to go on saying solution was not far away.


She said she had spent her time contributing to the growth of Nigeria and that it would be good to leave the current managers to bring out the best in them.
