Osagie Ize-iyamu is PDP’s candidate in Edo election

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, has condemned the new date fixed for the election on September 28.

He also said the reason given by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the postponement was weak, adding that the electoral body did not bother to consult the PDP before shifting the date of the election.

He said: “The new date was deliberately chosen to disenfranchise voters in Edo South Senatorial District.”

Ize-Iyamu described the zone as his strong base, noting that many people would be busy witnessing some activities tied to the coronation of the Oba of Benin, which would hold on September 26.

However, he urged his supporters to remain calm and go to the polls to excerise their right on election day.

The PDP candidate urged INEC and security agencies to deliver credible, free and fair election in Edo State.

Meanwhile, INEC has pledged that the postponement of Edo governorship election by two weeks would not in any way affect the credibility of election.

Mr Nick Dazang, the INEC deputy director for voter education and publicity, said in Abuja: “We are prepared in terms of staff needed to conduct the election and adequate training including accreditation for the observer group; both local and foreign, that will monitor the election.
